The views from the train were sometimes quite impressive : coconuts, rice, tea, bananas, bamboo, and mountains covered with jungle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La campagne travers\u00e9e par la ligne de chemin de fer est tr\u00e8s pittoresque : cocotiers, rizi\u00e8res, jardins de th\u00e9iers, bananeraies, champs de bambous, montagnes couvertes de for\u00eats \u00e9paisses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A letter was awaiting me from the German bhikku, Nyanaponika Thera. After dinner I went to him in his ermitage in the jungle. It is a very solid little house near a rest house for convalescing monks…
Nyanaponika Thera is old now, in his sixties or perhaps seventies. Originally a German Jew, he became a Buddhist years ago…
He writes and is charged with a great deal of editorial work for the local Buddhist publishing outfit, the Buddhist Publication Society<\/a>, which does some quite good things…
We walked out on the brow of a hill where the jungle has been cleared a bit and there is a fine view of the peaks to the southwest and northwest.
I hope my camera caught some of the enchanted beauty of this landscape.

J’ai re\u00e7u une lettre du bhikku allemand Nyanaponika Thera. Apr\u00e8s le d\u00eener, je me suis rendu dans son ermitage au milieu de la jungle. Il habite une maisonnette trapue \u00e0 proximit\u00e9 d’une maison de repos pour moines convalescents\u2026
Nyanaponika Thera est assez vieux, dans les soixante ou soixante-dix ans. Juif allemand d’origine, il s’est converti au Bouddhisme il y a de longues ann\u00e9es\u2026
Il \u00e9crit dans une publication bouddhiste locale, la Buddhist Publication Society<\/a>, qui fait de bonnes choses\u2026
Nous sommes mont\u00e9s \u00e0 pied au sommet d’une colline o\u00f9 la jungle avait \u00e9t\u00e9 quelque peu d\u00e9frich\u00e9e et d’o\u00f9 l’on a une belle vue sur les montagnes du sud-ouest et du nord-ouest.
J’esp\u00e8re que mon appareil photo a bien fonctionn\u00e9. Le paysage est enchanteur.
Ceylan est incomparable !

Later I visited Bishop Nanayakkara in the cathedral compound; built by Sylvestrines, it was originally a monastery. The cathedral is fairly handsome in its 18th-century colonial sort of way. Bishop Nanayakkara is very progressive and we talked long about my idea of Buddhist dialogue and of a meditation monastery that would be open to Buddhism. He drove me up to the top of the hill looking down on Kandy, and continued to talk about the Church today and the problems of Christians. I think he sees the situation clearly\u2014or in any event we agree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plus tard, j’ai rendu visite \u00e0 l’\u00e9v\u00eaque Nanayakkara dans les b\u00e2timents de la cath\u00e9drale – construits originellement par les Sylvestrins pour servir de monast\u00e8re. La cath\u00e9drale, d’un style colonial assez \u00e9l\u00e9gant, date du XVIIIe si\u00e8cle. Monseigneur Nanayakkara est un \u00e9v\u00eaque tr\u00e8s progressiste et nous avons longtemps discut\u00e9 du dialogue que je propose d’instaurer avec les Bouddhistes et du projet d’un monast\u00e8re de m\u00e9ditation qui serait ouvert au Bouddhisme. Il m’a conduit sur une colline d’o\u00f9 l’on voit bien Kandy, tout en continuant \u00e0 me parler de l’Eglise d’aujourd’hui et des probl\u00e8mes des Chr\u00e9tiens. Je crois qu’il voit la situation avec lucidit\u00e9, en tout cas nous avons les m\u00eames opinions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
